How to Prepare for an Outdoor Adventure: Essential Tips and Gear

Interested in experiencing some of the best outdoor adventure activities in 2025? You’re not alone. Plenty of people (myself included) are seeking more fulfilling and – for some of us – even more challenging pursuits.

Whether it’s hiking, camping, skiing, kayaking, rock climbing, sandboarding, swimming in the ocean, or snapping photos of nature, there’s lots to enjoy in the great outdoors.

Regardless of the activities at the top of your to-do list, it’s important you’re prepared for your outdoor adventure.

Preparing for Your Outdoor Adventure: 10 Essential Tips

1- Research and Plan Ahead

A major part of how to prepare for an outdoor adventure is investigating the location where you’re headed and how that environment relates to your outdoor activities. Important aspects to check might include the terrain, local wildlife, identifying potential risks, the weather, temperature, tide changes, altitude, and sunrise/sunset times. Also, research local regulations and remember to leave no trace (be responsible, respect nature, wildlife and other adventurers).

2- Have Multiple Navigation Tools

Getting lost is a real possibility, even when your outdoor adventure isn’t too far from home. In addition to your smartphone’s GPS and a mobile mapping app (e.g. Google Maps, Gaia GPS app, etc.), consider bringing along a compass and a paper map of the area. It’s better to be prepared in case your phone runs out of battery or there’s no cell signal.

3- Prepare Your Body

If you’re out of shape, or don’t usually engage in the activities you’ll be doing on a regular basis, consider strength and cardio training. This will help prepare your body for the physical exertion your outdoor adventure may demand and help to prevent injury.

4- Bring Sufficient Food and Water

Bring enough food and water for your trip, including a little extra in case of emergency. Staying hydrated is important – this goes double if you’ll be enjoying your outdoor adventure activities in the heat! As for food, pack nutritious snacks and meals that are high in protein and fiber to help sustain your energy and mental alertness. Good options include trail mix, granola bars, protein bars, and fruits.

5- Pack Essential Safety Gear

Accidents can happen, so it’s important to be as safe as possible. Make sure you bring all the necessary safety gear and equipment for whatever outdoor activity you plan to do. This may include a helmet, harnesses, life jacket, bear spray, radio, fire-starting tools, matches, emergency blanket, tarp, etc.). Additionally, pack a well stocked first aid kit in case you need to treat minor injuries.

6- Bring a Flashlight

Better yet, bring two flashlights, and maybe a lantern while you’re at it. Don’t rely on your mobile device as your only source of light. If you’re deep in the wilderness, it will be pitch dark. A flashlight will better illuminate your surroundings. Pack extra batteries as well.

7- Wear Sun Protection

Even when you enjoy the best outdoor adventure activities on cloudy days and in the winter, you need sun protection. Wear sunglasses, wear a hat, and whatever part of your skin isn’t covered, apply sunscreen (a minimum of SPF 30). This will help to protect against sunburn, snow blindness, and heat exhaustion.

8- Choose a Reliable Backpack

Get a robust, weatherproof backpack with multiple compartments and comfortable, adjustable straps. It should be large enough that it can carry all your essentials and strong enough to hold up to rough handling and the environment.

9- Dress appropriately for your outdoor adventure

Beyond bringing all the necessary equipment and items you’ll need to enjoy your activities (e.g. tent, skis, snowboard, bike, kayak, wetsuit, etc.) bring sensible clothing, footwear, and a jacket. This includes layers for warmth (e.g., hat, scarf, gloves), comfortable, sturdy, non-slip shoes/boots, and rain gear. Weather can be unpredictable.

10 – Have an Emergency Contact

Whether you intend to adventure alone or with others, inform someone who isn’t going with you about your plans. Let them know where you’ll be and when you’ll return. Someone expecting you to check in with them when you return home can raise the alarm if you don’t.

Conclusion

Exploring and having fun in nature’s playground can be an exciting and relaxing way to make wonderful memories. Just don’t leave planning the best outdoor adventure activities to the last minute.

Research where you want to go and local rules. Think about what safety and essential gear you’ll need for the experiences you want to enjoy. Pack the most ideal clothes and equipment. Keep safety in mind and leave no trace.
