Cambodia Cuts E-Visa Fees to Attract More Tourists

To bolster its tourism sector, the Cambodian government will cut e-visa fees for visitors to the country and business travelers, effective Jan. 1, 2025. The decision is aimed at making the country more accessible to the world and adding to the allure of the country as a premier Southeast Asian tourist destination.

The price of the new e-visa reduces the tourist visa fee from $36 to $30 and the business visa fee from $42 to $35. The aim is to lower the costs of these visas in order to attract more travelers, particularly from neighboring countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos, and key markets including China and the U.S.

The fee reduction is part of a greater push to see Cambodia as an affordable, yet engaging, destination, with historical landmarks like Angkor Wat, buzzing city hubs such as Phnom Penh, and natural wonders such as Phnom Kulen.

Cambodia Point of Entry

In recent years, the tourism industry of Cambodia has been growing at a fast rate. By November 2024, the country had welcomed 6 million international visitors, a 22% increase from the previous year. In 2023, tourism revenue hit $3.08 billion, positioning itself as one of the country’s major economic pillars alongside agriculture, garments, and construction. The government hopes that the lower e-visa fees will attract budget-conscious travelers and encourage repeat visits.

The reduction is in line with a regional trend of countries cutting e-visa costs as a visa perk to bring in more tourists. Neighboring countries, such as Thailand and Vietnam, have also adopted similar measures to attract international visitors. However, Cambodia’s focus on affordability gives it a unique advantage in capturing a share of the lucrative Southeast Asian tourism market.

The reduced fees are expected to spur not only tourism but also business travel. The initiative would make Cambodia more open to foreign investors and entrepreneurs, helping to foster economic partnerships and enhance the country's business profile on the international stage.

While the reduction may have little initial effect, the larger long-term payoff is considerable. This is part of a strategy Cambodian officials are using to sustain tourism growth and stay competitive in a fast-changing global travel landscape by lowering financial barriers to entry. As long as Cambodia continues to develop its infrastructure and promotes its many attractions, it is well placed to cement its position as a preferred tourist and business destination in Southeast Asia.

The Cambodian government's move to lower e-visa fees is a well-considered response to sustainable tourism development. As the country continues to welcome millions of visitors each year, this initiative will not only boost tourism revenue but also enhance Cambodia’s reputation as an accessible, affordable, and culturally rich destination. For travelers worldwide, now is the perfect time to enjoy Cambodia’s beauty and history at a reduced cost.
