Turkey’s rich culinary heritage offers a fusion of Middle Eastern, Central Asian, and Mediterranean flavors, making it a top destination for food lovers. From authentic Turkish kebabs to sweet and flaky baklava, every dish tells a story of tradition and taste. Whether you're exploring Istanbul, Cappadocia, or Antalya, these must-try Turkish foods will elevate your gastronomic journey.

Here are the top 5 foods to try in Turkey that will give five stars to your overall experience!

1. Kebabs – The Centerpiece of Turkish Cuisine

Turkey is known to have mouth-watering, rich, and buttery kebabs. Kebabs are meat dishes which are grilled or skewered, and come with a range of preparation and seasoning methods. Some of the types of kebabs include:

Adana Kebab: Adana is a historical city in the south of Turkey, and Adana kebab is originated from this region. It is made with a variety of spices added into minced lab, which is then skewered and grilled on an open flame. Locals like eating Adana kebabs with lavash bread, sumac-spiced onion, and butter-stirred vegetables.

Iskender Kebab: This kebab is originally from Bursa, and comes with doner kebab meat which is thinly sliced and comes with a full plate of pita, tomato sauce, yogurt, and melted butter – a treat to satisfy your gut to the fullest.

Shish Kebab: Shish kebab, unlike the rest of kebabs made with minced meat, consists of chunks of chicken or lamb marinated in local spices. These chunks are grilled on skewers over open flame and served with butter rice, roasted tomato, and grilled peppers.

Turkey kebab varieties are as versatile as the different regions there – it makes your overall experience full of new surprises and tastes.

2. Baklava – The Sweet and Juicy Treat

Your trip to Turkey is incomplete if you miss out on its sweet traditional dessert: Baklava. It is made with a flaky, puff pastry dating back to the Ottoman Empire. The phyllo dough is rolled in multiple layers and in the center the chef adds nuts and dates. Pistachios are often the highlight of this dessert. The pastry is loaded with syrup or traditional honey, which gives it a sweet and juicy touch.

I found my favorite baklava in Gaziantep during my visit to Turkey – the dessert is beyond perfection. The high-quality pistachios add to the richness of the dessert. Also, the flavorful and rich dough is crafted using the finest ingredients. The dessert is also served with a soothing cup of Turkish tea which adds to the overall experience.

3. Lahmacun – The Pizza of Turkey

The Lahmacun or the Turkish pizza stands out as a unique Turkish dish with its look. Lahmacun is made of a flatbread thin and crispy in nature, and is topped with a distinct flavored meat, usually minced lamb or beef. Simple toppings are added including tomatoes, garlic, herbs, onions, and spices. What makes Lahmacun different from a traditional pizza is the absence of cheese in it. That way, the natural ingredients mentioned above shine through the dish.

Usually, this pizza is served with a side of pickled vegetables, lemon wedges, and parsley. Locals like rolling it up with parsley and squeezing the lemon wedge that creates a magic of flavors for the taste buds in every bite. It is among the most popular street foods in the country, and you can find it almost anywhere – be it a local vendor or a five-star restaurant.

4. Manti: Turkish Dumplings with a Flavorful Twist

Manti in easy language, are dumplings in Turkish style. While baklava and Turkish tea are some of the beloved delicacies of Turkey, the country is also famous for its love of handmade pasta. Manti is the perfect example for this love. Usually, lamb mince is used as a filling with local herbs and spices as a filling for the dumplings. These dumplings are traditionally steamed or boiled.

What sets apart is the way of serving of these dumplings. Unlike soy sauce or chili oil, manti is served with a thick, fluffy, and creamy garlic yogurt with a drizzling of red chili flakes infused with melted butter. In some regions, you can also find a hint of sumac or dried mint which adds to the overall flavor profile of the dish.

Kayseri, a part of the Anatolian region in the country is known for the delicate dumplings in extraordinarily small size.

5. Meze – The Turkish “Thali” of Appetizers

Meze – it’s not a single dish, rather a display of numerous small appetizers served before the main course in Turkey. It is a part of the tradition of Turkey, and you can find this in all traditional restaurants or meyhanes “taverns”. You can experience a broad range of different textures, ingredients, and flavors as you indulge in a traditional meze experience. Typically, a meze consists of the following:

  • Hummus: A creamy dip of white chickpeas, sesame seed sauce, garlic, and lemon juice.
  • Haydari: A creamy dip of yogurt combined with fresh herbs and garlic.
  • Ezme: A tomato-based dip with onions, olive oil, and chili peppers.
  • Yaprak Sarma: Grape leaves stuffed with pine nuts, rice, and aromatic herbs.
  • Fava Bean Puree: A flavorful paste made using fava beans.

You can enjoy meze with fresh bread. An anise-infused national alcoholic drink raki is also served with meze. Meze is a flavorful experience everyone must try when they get to visit Turkey.

Whether you’re savoring smoky kebabs, indulging in sweet baklava, or enjoying a spread of meze, every bite tells a story of tradition and craftsmanship.
